RECOLLECTIONS:
Frances Mabel (Conger) Mendenhall, my grandmother. The best description of her is she was a "Lady", she always wore dresses and aprons. If she went to town or church, she wore gloves and a hat. She was a very religious person. She belonged to the "Seventh Day Adventist Church", and strictly followed their teachings. She was an excellent cook and always had homemade donuts for the grandchildren. She had a beautiful yard and fantastic flowers of all kinds. She raised all kinds of berries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Boysenberries, gooseberries, strawberries and grapes. She raised chickens and sold the eggs. I don't know what kind of education she had, but was a very intelligent, loving and understanding. She was an important part of my life even though I only saw her once a year until I was 12 years old.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Ira Harrison Mendenhall, my grandfather, was a very easy going loving man, he looked like a typical grandfather in his bib overalls, pot belly and white hair. He was deaf, we always had to holler at him. He liked to play games, play the mouth harp which he was good at. He would take my brother and I fishing, which I loved to do and still do. He raised a Dairy Herd of Jersey Cows and sold milk and cream in Cedaredge, Colorado.

RESEARCHER-QUESTION: Ilda Pearl (Conger) Mendenhall recorded descendants of James Westfall Conger, 1830, of Kansas. Who has a copy of her work?
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I , p. 4-f - Maxine Crowell Leonard)OBITUARY: Ilda Pearl Mendenhall
Ilda Pearl Mendenhall, second child of Ira Frank and Mollie Rankin Conger, was born Oct. 18, 1889 on a farm southwest of Beloit, Kansas. The family lived in the Beloit area and she attended school at "Round Top," until they moved to Jewell County in 1903. She received the rest of her schooling in county schools mostly in the Ionia area. As a young lady, Pearl worked as a practical nurse under the guidance of Dr. Poppin of Ionia. She cared for the sick in their homes, and assisted in bringing a new generation into the world. On Dec. 28, 1910, Pearl became the bride of George C. Mendenhall and went to live on a farm just a few miles south of Esbon, Kansas. Two sons were born to this union, and before Pearl and George left this farm two daughters-in-law had been added to the family and three grandsons. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary there in Dec. 1960.
Due to the failing health of her mate, they moved to Mankato, Kansas in August of 1963 where they resided until his passing on May 21, 1970. At that time she decided she wanted to be closer to one of the family, so on Oct. 1, 1970, Pearl moved to Sunny Slope Manor at Beloit, Kansas. She lived there until her health began to fail. On Oct. 25, 1979, she moved into the home of her son, Verl and his wife, and remained there until Sept. 14 of this year when she entered Hilltop Lodge so she could have constant care, and be kept as comfortable as possible. She departed this life on Oct. 24, [1983], after a span of 94 years and 6 days.
Pearl was the last surviving member of her generation of the Mendenhalls. She was one of eight children of her own family of which only one brother remains. Those preceding her in death were a baby sister, Bessie, Elva Henningsen, Mabel Mendenhall, Jim, Cliff, and Bill, and a half-brother, Coad Conger, who lived at Moose Jaw, Canada.
She leaves to mourn her passing -- two sons, Floyd and wife, Beulah, of Superior, Nebr., and Verl and wife, Eva, of Beloit, Kansas. Three grandsons, Arnold and wife, Agnes, of Huron, South Dakota; David and wife, Carol, of Sterling, New York; and Arden and wife, Karen, of Logan, New Mexico. Six great grandsons -- Scott and Brian of Huron; David Jr., and Chad of Sterling; Brandon and Nathan of Logan; and one great granddaughter, Heidi Ann of Logan, who arrived after Pearl's 90th birthday. The first girl in three generations of this family. Pearl was so thrilled to be able to hold her and rock her to sleep on several occasions.
Also among the survivors is the remaining brother, Elmer and wife Anna, of Delta, Colo., and two sisters-in-law, Verna of Fairfield, Ia., and Zelma of Kahoka, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, first cousins, friends and old neighbors. All -- made up a part of her life.
Pallbearers were her three grandsons -- Arnold, David and Arden Mendenhall, and three nephews -- Dale and Rex Henningsen, and Bernard Blair. The funeral was held at the Kramer Funeral Home in Mankato with Rev. Appleton presiding. Songs were sung by Newell and Merlin Alexander; burial was in the Esbon Cemetery.
Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound or foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark. For though from out our borne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
