BIOGRAPHY: A Biographical Sketch of the Conger Family - Bi-Centennial History of Bethany, Harrison County, Missouri.
The Conger family has been in the newspaper profession in Missouri, Illinois and Oklahoma for five generations. The family now operates the "Republican-Clipper," in Bethany, MO.
In the middle part of the 19th Century, Lucien W. Conger operated a newspaper in Oneida, Illinois, located a short distance from Galesburg. Lucien and his wife, Elizabeth Brown, became parents of a son Clarence in 1885.
Clarence, who becamed associated with his father in the Oneida newspaper, married Frances Vincent, formerly of New York State, about the year 1880. They became the parents of Erwin Cook Conger who later followed in the path of his father and grandfather as the publisher of a newspaper.
in 1886, Clarence and Frances Conger moved from Oneida to Unionville, MO with their two year old son, Erwin, and began publishing the "Unionville Republican." They became the parents of another son and daughter, Lucien and Bertha.
Erwin became a "printer's devil" in his father's newspaper shop learning the business from top to bottom, or more appropriately from bottom to top. He was educated in the Unionville school system where he became a top-flight brass horn player. For a time Erwin entertained the thought of using his musical talent to join the Ringling Brothers Circus, but eventually decided to stay in the newspaper business.
Erwin married Nett Niday, who grew up on a farm at St. John, MO. They became the parents of a daughter, Dorothy, and two sons, Vincent and Clarence. The family left Unionville in 1916 for Newkirk, Oklahoma where they published the "Newkirk Rep-Journal" for many years. The family then moved to Bethany, [MO] in 1925 when they acquired the "Bethany Clipper" which was consolidated with "The Republican" in 1929.
Vincent joined his father in publishing the "Republican-Clipper" until Erwin's death in 1951. Both served as president of the Northwest Missouri Press Assn, as did Vincent's son, Phillip.
Erwin's son, Clarence, died in the mid-1930's as the result of an accident. His wife, Nett, died in 1945. Dorothy Conger married Ray Weightman, an attorney at Maryville who later became a circuit judge. They became parents of Conger Weightman, now a school principle [sic] in Denver.
Vincent Conger married Bedonna Guyman of Bethany in 1940. They became the parents of Phillip 1i 1945 and Michael Vincent in 1943 [sic, probably should be 1949]. Both sons served as "printer's devils" under Vincent and Phillip later became managing editor of the paper while Michael joined the law profession in Kansas City. Phillip married Katheryn Fay Stroup of Fredericktown, MO and they became the parents of a daughter, Rachel Lynn, in 1973. Michael married Holly Hollaway on 24 Jan 1976.
