RECOLLECTIONS:
In Oct 1969, Joyce Conger Robertson wrote the following:On Jun 1, 1905, in Plains, Montana, by father was born. He was the first-born of my grandparent's five children, and he was named, Judson Weldon Conger.
His early years were spent in Plains, Sidney and for the longest period, in Lewiston, Montana, small towns in which my grandfather worked as a newspaperman. My father likes to say that he was born in the backroom of a newspaper printshop, hinting that this early exposure to the roar of the presses influenced his own choice of work as a grown man. Whether or not early environment was the causative factor, both my father and one of his brothers, Everton, pursued journalistic careers. (My sister and I carried this family passion into a third generation, in a small way, by editing our high school and college newspapers in California.)
Jud, as my father was, and still is called, entered the University of Montana at Missoula as a freshman in 1923. A shortage of funds curtailed his academic pursuits, a fact he still laments, and after a single year at the university, he went to work, first in lead mines in Idaho for an interval, then, as soon as he could land a spot, in a newspaper office.
During that brief academic interlude he met and determined to marry Winnifred Alice Gibson of Livingston, Montana, daughter of a prominent Montana attorney. Although this young woman did eventually become his wife and my mother, Alice had other ideas for her own life which kept her out of matrimony until 1931. She continued her education at the University of Montana and later at the University of Oregon, graduating from the latter with a major in Spanish and a minor in mathematics. She returned to her hometown to teach in the high school, traveled in the summers to Mexico and to Cuba, did additional study, and eventually was wed to the young newspaperman, my dad.
Judson W. Conger was by then a news reporter, ambitious and enthusiastic, on the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. It was in Bozeman, Montana, just 26 miles from my mother's hometown of Livingston, that they began their life together. My life began there too. I was their first child, born in September of 1933, and my sister, Marion (named for my father's mother) was their second and last child, born in May 1936.
I don't know if red hair is a widespread trait among Congers, but among our particular branch it is. As it's probably a rare genetic feature, I mention this. Also, we are proud of it. My father's hair was auburn, and he is freckled and brown-eyed. On of his sisters has gold-red hair and hazel eyes; both my sister and I have reddish hair and blue eyes; and now my sister has two small red-haired daughters of her own.
At some time in my early childhood, possibly around 1937, my father became the editor of the Chronicle. From that time, until the second World War altered our lives, he spent what I'm sure were among the happiest years of his life -- creative, productive, busy and full years. He became deeply and widely acquainted with the life of the community, and the newspaper reflected his awareness and concern. His "JWC" editorials had an appreciat[ive] and responsive readership. Even as a child I saw evidence of widespread respect for his integrity. Had I been a little older during those "editor-years," or a little more precocious, I would recall now specific battles he waged for and in the community, precisely what causes he espoused or decried.
All I remember with clarity is his great vitality and energy during those years, the purposefulness with which he lived. His spirit was bouyant. And despite the fact the he was at his office much or our waking hours and some of our sleeping hours, he always seemed a close and loving "Daddy." When he was with us he was 100% with us, and his humor, his play, his instruction, and his listening ear enriched our childhood immeasurably. He has joked that my mother married him "for my wealth, looks and social position," none of which he has ever had in any noticeable amount. But what he does have, as a person, as a friend, as a husband and father, was then and is now abundantly evident.
In 1942 my father decided that simply saving tin cans and riding his bicycle to work to conserve gasoline was not sufficient effort against our country's enemies. He enlisted in the Army. He went into the Infantry as a buck private at the age of 37. Crazy though it might have appeared, it was clearly a decision of conscience. My mother accepted it as such and went to work as a teacher of Spanish at Montana State College in Bozeman.
Just prior to VE-Day my father, with the rank of Corporal, was honorably discharged from the Army by virtue of having turned 40 years old. He returned from the war in Europe to changes in Bozeman and at the Chronicle. The Chronicle had new owners and, his thoughts already turned in other directions by his service experience, JWC looked around for some new work, a new place.
He found new opportunity on a newspaper in Fresno, California, and the family moved there in 1947. I was just entering high school, my sister the 6th grade. On the Fresno Bee, the only daily paper in that city, my father has been a general assignment reporter on the City Desk, police reporter, reviewer or various civic events and of books. Currently he is Assistant City Editor, a job he says he took chiefly "for the money" it could bring toward his imminent retirement; general reporting remains his favorite kind of newspaper work.
