PUBLIC_SERVICE: 1969 Birtday Greeting Honors Henderson House and Lucile Bailey Conger Fellowship Fund.

The Alumnae Council is celebrating the University's 152nd birthday this month. The 1969 Birthday Greeting asks all University of Michigan alumnae to contribute a penny for each year. The gift will honor the late Lucile Bailey Conger in whose name the fellowship fund has been established.

Lucile Bailey Conger was the Alumnae Secretary for 15 years. She retired in 1947. Under her dynamic leadership, the alumnae were united into the Alumnae Council and a new respect was created for their activities in service to the University. Many new alumnae clubs were organized, two of which bear her name -- one is in Ann Arbor, and the second in Owosso. Of all the alumnae projects which benefited from her vital interest and active involvement, Henderson House may have benefited more than any other. This cooperative residence for women is pictured on the cover of the 1969 greeting.

In 1917, the Michigan alumnae established an on-campus home for girls who chose to live and work together, thereby making it financially possible for some young women of demonstrated scholastic ability to attend the University. This early effort to have women's housing was called, Alumnae House, which was followed by Mary Markley House. In 1945, under the guidance of Mrs. Conger, money was raised by the alumnae to purchase the Huber residence at 1330 Hill Street, which, ultimately became the Mary Bartron Henderson House, a residence for 30 girls.
