Oliver Carrington CongerOBITUARY: Oliver C. Conger, 65, an influential figure in the finance and
insurance fields in Pottstown, [PA] for over 40 years, died at his home
Thursday after being ill a year.Mr. Conger, husband of Rita (Edwards) Conger and son of the late Oliver Pliny
and Ann (Gillespie) Conger, was born in New York City. He lived in Nashville,
Tenn. before attending the U.S. Naval Academy, at Annapolis, MD, where he
graduated in 1921.Three years later, Mr. Conger, who lived at Rockyln, Kepler Road, Lower
Pottsgrove was in Pottstown launching a career in insurance which saw him
heading his own firm in Philadelphia within several years.He joined the Pottstown firm of Jacob S. Bahr in 1942, and after trying his
hand at running his own firm, merged with the late J. Evans, Norristown. In
1932, they opened an office in Pottstown. In 1939, Alvin Beyer [Bayer] joined
the Norristown brokership and the name was changed to Evans, Conger and Bayer,
Incorporated.Mr. Conger was not only instrumental in the field of insurance, but also in the
merger of the fifth largest bank in Philadelphia. He was a director on boards
of many corporations.During World War II, Mr. Conger was a Major in the U.S. Army in charge of
contract re-negotiations in the Philadelphia district's ordnance department.

became House Republican whip.
His duty was to maintain party discipline, and one associate recalled, "No man
