10873. Richard Robinson North

Richard Robinson North

DEATH-OBITUARY:
A tragedy so appalling in its nature that the town and community have not yet recovered from the shock and horror occurred in Neosho about 6:30 o'clock the evening of the Fourth of July [1930] when something apparently went wrong with the mechanism of an airplane driven by Richard North 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick North, Wood and Grand streets, and the plane crashed on East Spring street, the accident and the incident leading up to it costing the lives of the young pilot and his 18-year-old companion, George Stach of Topeka, Kans.

No one will ever know what happened 300 feet in the air when trouble first was apparent to the spectators. It is believed that engine trouble which had bothered the young aviators earlier in the day, and to correct which they were said to have made a landing at Monett, again developed. Young Stach was seen out on the wing and it is thought that he had climbed there to try to make repairs. Suddenly he slipped from the wing as the plane made a quick turn and he fell the three hundred feet, being killed instantly, it is believed. After his fall the plane went into a nose dive and crashed upon the Kansas City Southern tracks just east of the North storage plant. Workmen nearby rushed to the plane to extricate the pilot's body, but before this could be accomplished the gasoline tank exploded, the ship burst into flames, driving the rescuers back and the boy's body was burned past recognition. A ring given Richard recently by his aunt, Miss Mabel Robinson, and a belt buckle were means by which the body was positively identified.

Hundreds of people all over Neosho witnessed the tragedy. Fred North, grandfather of Richard, was standing in the yard at his home watching the maneuvers of the plane. He knew his grandson had flown to Eureka Springs in the black and orange plane of the --------------- (part of article is missing)

The boys had been to Eureka Springs, Ark. doing exhibition flying and were on their way home when the accident occurred. They evidently had some engine trouble over Monett, as reports say they had a forced landing near the golf course there. Evidently it was remedied for a short time later they appeared over town here, circling the square North piloting and Stach walking the wings.

North made a wide circle over the south side and was east of the square when he made a fairly sharp left bank and we are told that the steepness of the bank made Stach lose his hold, throwing him to the ground near the scene of the crash and breaking practically every bone in his body. As soon as Stach slipped from the wing, the plane went into a tail spin and crashed, after desperate efforts on North's part to right it.

A coroner's jury, under the direction of Coroner James Nutman of Granby, composed of John S. Sutherland, Chas. Kirk, With McFadden, W. A. Rose, Chas. Wilhite and C. S. Daugherty of Neosho was summoned soon after the accident and several witnesses testified. the verdict was that the boys came to their death by an airplane accident.

Richard North was a student of the Flying School having received his private pilot's license from the commerce department of the government a short time ago. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick North, Mr North being proprietor of the Seiberling tire shop and a member of one of Neosho's oldest families. Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Eleanor, 13 years old, and a host of other relatives. He was one of our finest young men, a good student in high school and his ambition to be a flyer was great enough that he earned his own money to pay for his flying tuition.

The plane was completely destroyed. Ira S. McReynolds, owner of the school's planes, came to Neosho Friday night. He was very much distressed over the tragedy. He agreed with the spectators that the accident was caused by the fact that Stach, who was very heavily built, fell from the wing, the sudden release of weight throwing the ship into a spin and the low altitude at which they were flying made it impossible to bring it to a straight position and regain complete control before crashing.

On Sunday afternoon at 2;30 o'clock one of the largest funerals ever held in Neosho took place at the North home, corner Wood street and Grand avenue, when the Rev. Roy Morgan, pastor of the First Congregational Church, preached the funeral sermon which was most touching and his words most wisely chosen. He told of the pleasure he had personally had in his contact with Richard, as a pupil in his Sunday school class, and as he had received him into membership of the First Congregational Church of the city. Reverend Morgan spoke most fittingly of the joy of youth in the world of progress, and of the fullness of the life of such a boy, with his stalwart character, in accomplishing the one thing which had been a dream of his boyish life.
