(Furnished by Warren Grubner)

RECOLLECTIONS:
Albert Benton Conger, was known as Al. Warren Grubner first met him in 1946. Warren stated that to his knowledge he was never referred to as Junior.

Al worked for the Burroughs Corp., for 43 years. He maintained adding machines, typewriters and any other machine sold by his company. His beginning territory was Brooklyn, NY. Later he transferred to Suffolk County, NY, settling in Bay Shore, NY.

He liked baseball. He coached and kept score and statistics for local teams. He once took Warren Grubner to see the "House of David" team, of all bearded met play at Huntington, NY. At that time it was the only field with lights for night games. Another time they went to Ebbetts Field to see the Dodgers play a Twi-Night Double Header with Pittsburgh.

Al worked very hard at his job. When he was at home, his wife and three daughters did his bidding.

He bowled very well and played on bowling teams. He even played catch with is 5 grandsons, sitting down.

He loved his family, had many friends and associates, but was a little conservative in his life style - socially. I am glad to have known him.

DEATH: 8 Aug 1970 at the Southside Hospital in Bayshore, NY

Ruth Eleanor Reid

Ruth Eleanor Reid

RECOLLECTIONS:
Ruth Eleanor Conger was the consumate extrovert. Warren Grubner met her on 19 Jun 1946 when she drove her daughter, Eleanor, to the Mason General Hospital to pick Warren up when he was discharged from the hospital.

She was talkative, smiled a lot, caring, compulsive. She became a saleslady for a dress shop (very chic place). She bought many of the dresses and wore them well. She liked to dance and often would, though her husband, Albert, only watched. Warren and Eleanor were often present at the dances.

Daughter Eleanor Conger, like her mother, wore the best. She liked high heels and was very neat with her make-up, etc. She always liked shopping. But, Eleanor was an introvert. Like her mother she was often smiling. She only spoke when spoken to, not a conversationalist at all. She was usually with her mom, so there was no need for her to speak. Mother and daughter were very close.

When Al died, Ruth kept her job with "Post and Company" and stayed in her own home until time forced her to go to live with Warren and Eleanor. Ruth added a room to the home of Warren and Eleanor at her own expense in 1978. She died in 1984.

Samuel Benn

Samuel Benn

BIRTH: 4 child in a family of 8

OCCUPATION: carpenter; Sheriff

MARRIAGE:
The meeting blossomed into a two-year romance culminating in marriage "before breakfast" Sunday June 12, 1862, at the Samuel H. Williams home on Chehalis Point. Samuel Benn, 38, m, w, farmer, married, b. New York
COMMENT: The place of birth is in conflict. Mary E. Palmer wrote, "Apparently Sam's Irish birth was a well kept secret during his life. Only the family knew that his parents immigrated to NYC when he was a small child. He considered it a private joke, but Sam did show the Aberdeen city comptroller his Naturalization papers in the early 1900s. It only became public a few days after he was buried. At least I know that either census information wasn't provided by Sam or Martha, or that they felt they couldn't trust the census taker to keep it private."

DEATH-IMMIGRATION: Senility; Immigration 1845. How long in U.S., if foreign born, 89 years.
(Source: Washington State Death Certificate, LDS Film # 0196709, Grays Harbor Record No. 162)

OBITUARY: The Northwest lost one of it most colorful pioneers in the passing of Samuel Benn, founder of the city of Aberdeen, Washington, who died September 16, 1935, at the age of 103 years.

RESEARCHER: Mary Ellen Palmer of Colorado Springs was a descendant of Samuel and Martha Benn.

RECOLLECTIONS:
Samuel Benn was born on 2 Jul 1832 in Emo, Queens, Ireland. He immigrated in 1845. He was naturalized on 9 Oct 1855 in Brooklyn, New York.

Going to California to find out what happened to two missing brothers who were working the gold fields, Sam left New York City aboard the steamer 'Northern Light' on 5 March 1856 bound for Panama. At Colon he crossed the isthmus by rail to Balboa. There he boarded the paddle wheeler 'Sonora' for California, arriving on the 26th of March. After finding out that his brothers had drowned in an accident on the Feather River, Sam worked in the Tuolumne mines.

In April 1859 Sam and a cousin, George Hubbard, sailed from California to Victoria, Canada. There they bought a sailboat and sailed Puget Sound for a month looking for a place to settle. When they stopped in Olympia they heard of the Chehalis valley and traveled overland to scout the area. Liking what they found they returned to Olympia for their boat and supplies needed to settle, arriving back at their homesteads on June 15, 1859. Sam chose the south bank while George picked the north bank of the Chehalis. At the site of the present (1935) Wishkah bridge, Sam founded his first home on Grays Harbor. Sam and his father-in-law, Reuben Redman, eventually traded their lands as Reuben was tired of pulling his cattle out of the sloughs near the harbor and Sam was looking for more land for his cattle. Sam ended up with the land at present day Aberdeen and Reuben with Melbourne.

To attract the railroad to Aberdeen, Sam gave building lots to men who either worked 10 days labor building the railroad or paid 10 days wages (at $2/day) for someone to do so. In one of the news articles after his death, it was estimated that Sam had paid over $500,000 in property taxes during his lifetime.

He appeared on the census in 1860 in Grand Mound PO, Chehalis, Washington Territory. He was Sheriff on 9 May 1860. Sam still earned a living as a carpenter. Being sheriff didn't pay well and took too much time, so Sam didn't keep the job for many years.

He appeared on the census in 1870 in Chehalis co., Washington.

He appeared on the census in 1880 in Chehalis co., Washington.

He was elected as Mayor in 1891 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington. Mayors in Aberdeen serve 1 year terms.

Sam was 100 years old on 2 Jul 1932 and received a telegram from President Herbert Hoover, "Felicitations and God's continued blessing to Aberdeen's beloved pioneer father from a grateful nation on the occasion of the centennial of his birth."

Sam Benn died on 16 Sep 1935 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington. According to his death certificate, he died of senility. This doesn't agree with what Sam's surviving family recalled about him and what was written in his obituaries printed in the Aberdeen newspapers. He was noted for having a sharp mind.

The headline of 'The Aberdeen Daily World' (17 Sept. 1935 front page) reads
"BENN DEAD; SORROW GRIPS HARBOR, Father Of Aberdeen Expires Peacefully, Mind Clear To Last"
The obituaries refer to a recent illness (of several months) that wasn't specified. He was buried on 19 Sep 1935 in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington. The funeral services, officiated by Wm. McDowell, Russel Mack and Rev. Sylvester Robertson, were held at 2pm in the First Congregational church, First and H streets in Aberdeen. Governor Clarence D. Martin and other state officials came from Olympia to attend the funeral. The services were broadcast on KXRO radio "to permit those who through illness or the size of the crowd cannot be present inside the church" -

'Grays Harbor Washingtonian'. A front page article in the same paper reported 'City offices, stores and other business places of Aberdeen will be closed Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 o'clock as a final salute to Aberdeen's "grand old man."' Even the US Post Office in Aberdeen closed for the funeral.
