5933. George Ringland Conger

George Ringland Conger

OCCUPATION: medical doctor

HOBBIES: Liked to fish and pitch horseshoes

BIOGRAPHY: From "History of Washington County," submitted by George Ringland
Conger, b. 1935.

The man who devotes his life to the alleviation of human suffering is pursuing
a calling which in importance and beneficial results is second to no other, for
if true to his calling and earnest in his efforts, he is indeed a public
benefactor. Dr. George Ringland Conger early realized that to those who attain
determinate results in the medical profession there must be given not only
technical skill but also a broad human sympathy which must become the actuating
motive for helpfulness. So he has dignified and honored his profession by his
able and self-abnegating services in which, through year of close application,
he has attained notable distinction and unqualified success.

Dr. Conger was born near Amity, Washington county, [PA] on the 8th of June
1865, and is the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Ringland) Conger. The father was
born near Lindley's Mills, spent practically his entire life in this county and
died near Hackney Station, March 20, 1912. He was a farmer and owned the land
on which was at one time located the oldest Indian settlement west of the
Alleghany mountains. he was the son of David and Mary (Bell) Conger, the
former of whom was a lifelong resident of Washington county, a farmer and
member of the Presbyterian church.

His father, also named David, was a native of Scotland [sic, not true], who, on
coming to this country settled in Washington county, where he devoted himself
to agricultural pursuits. Elizabeth Ringland was also a native of Washington
county and died there. She was the daughter of James and Sarah (Stockdale)
Ringland, the former of whom, a native of Ireland, became a successful farmer
of this county. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a man of strong
character.

George R. Conger secured his elementary education in the public schools and in
Lone Pine Academy, of which he was a graduate. Having determined to devote his
life to the medical profession, he then matrriculated in the medical department
of the University of Pittsburgh, where he was graduated in 1892, with the
degree of Doctor of Medicine. He immediately came to Taylorstown and engaged
in the practice of his profession, to which he has devoted himself since.

A physician of rare attainments, broard general culture and perfected skill, it
has falled to his lot to bring alleviation of suffering and restoration of
health to countless afflicted ones in his community. This has been his
professional contribution and has naturally constitued the larger part of his
labors, but it has not by any means measured the whole sum of his activities.
As a valiant champion of all lines of civic and social progress and betterment
he is entitled to the respect of the community. His cheerful presence, his
kindly manner, his utter freedom from every form of affectation, have endeared
him personally in an unusually intimate relation to one of the largest circles
of devoted and loyal patients and friends ever possessed by a physician in this
locality.

Fraternally, Dr. Conger belongs to Claysvill Lodge, No. 447, Free and Accepted
Masons, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias. He
has been deeply interested in the educational welfare of his community and
served for sixteen years as a member of the board of school directors in Blaine
Township. He is a member and elder in the Christian church at Taylorstown.

Dr. and Mrs. Conger are the parents of two children, namely: George Ringland
Conger, Jr., who was born August 14, 1911 and is a student in the Taylorstown
High School; and Sarah Frances Conger, who was born January 26, 1916, and is
attending the public schools.

(Furnished by Joyce Posey)

BIOGRAPHY:
David Allison Conger lived on the old home place at Dunns Station, PA.

I wish all the many descendants of David and Sarah could see this place. The road curves around the yard and runs a few rods down into an old-fashioned picturesque covered bridge across the winding stream and into the little village of Conger Station, named for this couple, and which is no longer a town since the coming of the paved roads and automobiles. If David and Sarah could come back to the old home the hills and stream might look natural after 150 years, but the fine Pennsylvania road system would be beyond belief.

5956. William Franklin Conger

William Franklin Conger

RESIDENCES: Lindley's Mills, Washington Co., PA

QUESTION: Where was Lindley's Mills, (Lindly's Mills) PA Located? Demas Lindley, with his family came in 1773 [to Washington Co., PA], and with him twenty other families, all from New Jersey, nearly all from the county of Morris, which had been his home before this migration. The families settled at different points along Ten-Mile Creek.

Demas Lindley located upon four hundred acres of land situated on the middle fork of Ten-Mile. This property was warranted to him, Feb. 5, 1785, receiving the title of "Mill Place," it's location being very near the present village of Prosperity. (Prosperity, PA was platted out in 1848, by Robert Wallace, page 845.)

Mr. Lindley became owner of another tract of land called, "Headquarters," warranted to him on 18 Apr 1796, containing 368 acres.

A fort was early established upon the property of Mr. Lindley, called Lindley's Fort, and was the rendezvous for the residents of the county.

Mr. Lindley built a grist and merchant mill on his property soon after his settlement here, the mills were known as "Lindley's Mills."

Demas Lindley died in 1818.

LAND:
Lindley Fort - Demas Lindley had settled on this track, known as "Mill Seat," in 1773, patented in 1785. Lindley fortified blockhouse was built in 1774-1775. Location: About a quarter mile south of Prosperity, [PA] on Pennsylvania #18.

5960. Emma Gertrude Conger

Emma Gertrude Conger

PARENTS: John Calvin Conger and Joannah Milliken

Problem: A birth date of 26 Nov in an unspecified year has been suggested by David Dodd. This doesn't agree with the date of birth of 27 Sep 1870 found in her obituary.

BIRTH-CONFLICT: There is much confusion about when Emma G. Conger was born. Emma G. Conger is listed in the 1870 Census of Morris Twp., Washington Co., PA, taken on 11 June 1870. This would make birth dates of either, 27 Sep 1870 or 26 Nov 1870 impossible.

Several other Conger researchers have listed her as being 8 months old at the time of the June 1870 census. It is not know where they found this information. This would make a birth date of 27 Sep 1869, plausible.

Apparently there is a tombstone with the date of birth listed as 1869.

Reading the 1870 PA Census record, Robert Guilinger, feels it clearly reads, age 1/12, thus making her date of birth Abt. May 1870. This date is used here.
