BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph Conger bought land at Newark, [NJ] from Nehemiah Lindsley on 24 Dec 1793.Mrs. Joseph Conger (presumably Hannah) ran a school in Newark in 1784 -- still in existence in 1800. She was founder and manager of the Newark Female Charitable Society in 1803 -- which is probably the reason Joseph left her only $500.00.
The family residence was on the south side of Market Street and east of Broad Street, and was torn down in 1906.

PROBATE:
Joseph Conger's will, dated at Newark, [NJ], 23 Feb 1816 and probated 24 July 1820, leaves wife, Hannah, $500.00, etc. To daughters, Abby Conger and Deborah, wife of Abner Campbell, he left suits of mourning, and to Abby, $1,000, he having already given that amount to Deborah.Son-in-law, Abner Campbell, was to have the mortgage against his property then held by J.C. cancelled.
Codicil, dated 27 Sep 1819 left to parents David and Mary Conger, $40.00 annually. To Rev. James Richards, in trust for the Education Society of the Presbyterian Church in U.S.A., formed at New Brunswick in Nov., $250.00.
Executors, brother Obediah and friend Aaron Nichols. Witnesses, Ellison Conger, Moses Munn and Apphia Pierson.
The estate was inventoried at, $4,834.50 by Isaac Nichols and Moses Smith on 4 Nov 1820.
