OBITUARY: Porterfield M. Conger
On Wednesday morning, May 29th, at 9 o'clock in the Methodist church were held the funeral services over the remains of Porterfield Mabe Conger, who died at his home in this city on Monday noon, May 27th, 1918. The interment was made in Tilden cemetery, [Tilden, NE].The members of Pythagoras Lodge A.F. and A.M. well represented by local and non-residents of which he was an old and esteemed member, escorted the remains from his residence to the church, being joined at Fraternal Hall by the members of Jeptha Chapter O.E.S. of which society he was also a member. At the church, which was filled to overflowing with sympathizing friends and relatives, the full Episcopal burial service was impressively read and an appropriate address delivered by the Rev. W.W. Wells of Valentine, who had been summoned especially for this purpose. There were beautiful floral tributes placed upon the casket. After the ceremonies at the church the remains were taken to the depot, thence by rail to Tilden where they were finally laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery of that place with the solemn funeral committal service of the Masonic fraternity, whose members in conformity with their ancient custom accompanied the remains faithfully to their last resting place. These services were also conducted by Rev. Wells as Master, at the request of the local Master of Pythagoras Lodge.
A delicious lunch was then served in their hall by Tilden Chapter O.E.S. for the visiting members, friends and relatives, thereby displaying in a touching and much appreciated manner their sympathy and fraternal spirit. Much praise is also due to the local Masons for the efficient manner in which they met and cared for the funeral party.
Mr. Conger was born in Sidney, Champaign county, Illinois, Dec. 6th, (sic) 1866, moved with his parents to Missouri at the age of one year, living there five years. He then returned to his birthplace where he resided until 10 years of age, moving thence to Nebraska in 1882 and living there until the date of of his death.
The deceased is survived by seven brothers and five sisters, a wife and six daughters, of whom the wife, daughters and following brothers and sisters were present: Mrs. Dave Miller of Stanton; Mrs. W.R. Goll of Ft. Calhoun, Nebr.; Mrs. Levi Acton of Wakefield, Nebr.; Messrs. Alex Conger of Ewing; Wm. Conger, Clearwater and John Conger, Pilger. Those not able to be present were: Mesdames Geo. Ward of Deer Lodge, Mont.; John Foy, Pilger; and Messrs. Sam Conger, Mead, Kansas; Elias Conger, Neligh; C.P. Conger, So., Dak.; and Anderson Conger, Neligh.
Mr. Conger, in his long residence in Ewing is spoken of as a successfull business man of fine ability and attainments. He was a kind and loving father and one of his chief regrets was to leave them fatherless and bereft. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal church at Ewing, [NE], and died in full communion with the same, having received the last sacrament just before his death. He went to Rochester a little over a year ago for an operation at the hands of the Mayo Bros., from which he never fully recovered.
During his last illness all that money, care and loving attention could do for his recovery were lavished upon him, but all to none effect, even when accompanied by the most astonishing patience, perseverance and will power on his part during all his weeks of intense suffering, when with "Thy will be done," he commend his soul to God who gave it. For three weeks before his death his sister, Mrs. Miller, acted as his special nurse, faithfully remaining at his bedside with affectionate attention until death came to relieve him of his sufferings.
Surely he fought a good fight, kept the faith, and henceforth there is a crown of righteousness laid up for him. May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him.
