5732. Charles Crogan Conger

Charles Crogan Conger

CENSUS: His name was shown as Crogen, age 10, m., OH in the 1850 census, Adams Twp., Monroe Co., OH.

Problem: Was the middle name, Crogen, Crogan or Cogan? According to Robert Guilinger the correct spelling is Crogan.

MARRIAGE: C.C. Conger and Sarah A. Hall, by Rev. John Boyd, at St. Lukes Church Marrietta, Washington Co., OH on 23 May 1871. Extracted from Ohio Marriages 1802-1880 which appeared in the "Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly."

9706. Grace Sidney Conger

Grace Sidney Conger

RESEARCHER: According to Robert Guilinger, Grace Sidney Conger, the aunt of Clement Ellis Conger, was one of the Conger family researchers. She never married. She died on 14 Jan 1944. Sometime after her death Clement Ellis Conger donated her files to the Library of Congress.

One item that she researched was to identify the ship that John Belconger came on from England to the Massachusetts colony. She found a ship called, the "Ann & Elizabeth" that made numerous trips from England to Massachusetts in the late 1600's. Whether this ship actually brought John Belconger to Newburyport, MA in 1665 could not be proven.

5740. Margaret Emmaline Conger

Margaret Emmaline Conger

PARENTS: David Atkinson Conger and Catherine Lippincott

BIOGRAPHY:
George Guilinger, the husband of Margaret E. Guilinger, spent the last few years of his life in a wheelchair and died at age 45. George and Margaret had a total of 10 children but only 5 (3 boys and 2 girls) were alive in 1907 at the time of George's death.

Margaret took in washing to support her family and the two older boys raised a large garden. After the death of George's parents in 1908/1909 Margaret inherited their home near Reno, OH which she expanded to handle a larger family. Margaret saw to it that four of her five children received a High School education, highly unusual for the times and her circumstances. One daughter obtained an Ohio Teaching Certificate and taught school for several years. One son, the father of Robert Guilinger, took a 2 year business course at the Marietta Commercial College. Another son joined the U.S. Navy in 1918 and later, using his World War I GI Bill, he obtained an LLB degree from Ohio Northern Law School in Ada, Oh.

Margaret and three children, Elizabeth, Roxie and Ralph, moved to Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH in 1918. There Margaret rented a large home that she converted to a rooming house. She supported herself by taking in roomers until her death in 1927. Although Robert Guilinger, the author of this piece, never knew his grandmother, since she died before he was born, he considers her a truly remarkable woman.

Nellie Leota Gulinger

DEATH: Nellie L. Guilinger died in 1904 as a result of burns received in a stove oil explosion.

COMMENT: Robert Guilinger wrote: I believe Nellie Leota Conger, born 17 Aug 1905, in Dalzell, Washington Co., OH was named after my Aunt, Nellie Leota Guilinger, who died in 1904 in Washington Co., OH as the result of burns suffered in a stove oil explosion. Early in 1995, I wrote to my remaining aunt, 97 year old, Elizabeth Marie Guilinger Foust about this. My Aunt Bettie only vaguely remembers her sister, Nellie, as she was only 6 years old at the time of her death. However, she remembers that her mother (Margaret E. Conger) knew the Dearth family, including Olive Mae Dearth, the mother of Nellie Leota Conger. It was a custom in the early 1900's to name another child after one who had died. Usually it was done in the family; i.e., a cousin.

DEATH: SAD FATALITY. - Howells Journal
We have been called upon many times to chronicle the death of many a loved one in many a home, but the saddest duty devolves upon us to this week record the death of five of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Conger, residing three and a half miles west of this place, of that dread disease, diphtheria, only one child of a family of six remaining and she is now very low with the same sickness. Two other children, one half-sister and a half-brother of Mr. Conger, who are also living with them, are also very low. In their hour of need they have the assistance of Mrs. Conger's father, Rev. Garner of Nickerson, who arrived last Sunday, and neighbors have kindly assisted them in the burial of their loved ones, but because of fear of the contagious disease many friends have been unable to help them in caring for the sick. It is to be hoped that the children still sick may be spared them.

Death at all times casts a shadow over the home but particularly so when it claims one in the full tide of youth with all the indications of a useful life. Miss Nellie Conger was such. Possessed with talent, a personality that was pleasant and forceful and an ambition to do something, a promising career has been cut short.

Miss Nellie Conger was born in Stanton county, Nebraska, February 12, 1895 and died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Conger, east of Neligh Monday, July 15. The funeral will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m., from the Congregational church, services conducted by Rev. Rose.

When three years of age she moved to Antelope county with her parents and this has since been her home. She graduated from the Neligh high school in 1913 and taught school for four years. She was a member of the Rebecca lodge. She has been sick for some time and her death has been anticipated at any time for a month or more. Her brother, Elias Conger, Jr., is serving in the army, being stationed at Camp Cody, N.M., and is expected home for the funeral.
