BIOGRAPHY: Charles S. Conger
Charles S. Conger is a worthy representative of one of the earliest pioneer families of Appanoose county, [Iowa] and is well known in this section, where he was born. His popularity is due to definite attainment in agricultural pursuits and in the field of public life and his success and promience have rewarded an active, useful and honorable business career filled with hard work and perserving labor.

He was born on the farm which he now operates and which he calls the "Hillside Stock Farm, August 8, 1862, and is the son of Elias Conger, a native of Ohio.

The grandfather of this review, Enos Conger found the family in Iowa, moving to this state in the early period of its pioneer development and making a definite location in Appanoose county when the father of our subject was still a child. About the year 1844 he preempted land in this section of the state, upon the present site of the town of Exline, [IA], which is now a thriving and prosperous village.

Enos Conger later left his original tract and located upon the farm now owned by his grandson, this property having therefore been in possession of the family for three generations. The grandfather (Enos) owned two hundred acres which was all raw land when it came into his possession. He broke the soil and made substantial improvements and in the work of development was aided by his son, Elias, who was reared upon the farm and who after the death of his father continued its operation.

At the outbreak of the Civil War Elias enlisted in the 18th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry and served three years and six months in the Federal Army. He received his honorable discharge and returned home, where he remained a short time, later going to the Pacific coast. His wife, Miss Jane Ireland, was also a representative of a well known pioneer family. She died in 1868 and afterward Elias Conger went to Washington, where he engaged in the timber business, and later removed to Texas.

Charles S. "Seigel" Conger remained at home until after the death of his mother, when he was bound out (age 6) to a Mr. Tibler, a farmer of Putnam county, Missouri, from whom he received kind treatment and where he found a good home, and a quiet but strong affection sprang up between master and employee. After serving his time Mr. Conger remained on the farm which he operated, carrying forward the work of improvement and caring for Mr. Tibler in his old age. He thus grew familiar with the details of practical farming.

Later he purchased the farm and operated it for a number of years, disposing of it in 1886. He left Missouri and returned to Appanoose county, where he purchased 80 acres of the old homestead, which he began to farm and further improve. He is now the owner of 240 acres, all fenced, drained and developed, and most of which is under cultivation. He first erected a fine residence and later a good barn. He has excellent outbuildings and has a number of acres of orchard. He has made a speciality of raising and feeding stock and sometimes ships his animals direct to the markets. A man of quiet, steady industry, sound judgement and consertive business methods, he has advanced step by step from poverty to wealth and from humble position to one of prominence, being ranked today among the men who establish and promote agricultural standards in this part of the state.

Mr. Conger married in Putnam county, Missouri, December 15, 1884 [sic 21 Dec 1884;, Miss Betty Speak and they became the parents of six sons, of whom Roy N. met death by accident in 1911, when he was 25 years of age. Those who survive are: Finis T., Ira I., Benoni, Lowell E. and John L.

Mr. Conger gives his political allegiance to the Republican party and has always been a force in community affairs although he has never desired political preferment. In 1910, however, he was elected township trustee of Pleasant township and served as a delegate to numerous county conventions. For years he has been identified with educational work.

9660. Roy N. Conger

Roy N. Conger

PARENTS: Charles Seigel Conger and Betty Speak

DEATH: Roy Conger killed by train
The morning papers give accounts of the death of Roy Conger, of Cincinnati, Ia., who was rundown by a M.& St. L. freight train Fri. night [14 Jun 1912] near Grinnell, [IA] and instantly killed, the body being badly mangled. The papers stated the the supposed identity was established by means of papers found in the young man's clothing. A coroner's inquest did not hold the train crew responsiable.

By telephoning Cincinnati today it is learned that the young man's father received a message last night from Grinnell in regard to his son and left for that place, and later the report of his death came. The mother is prostrate over the shocking news.

Roy was 22 or 23 years of age and a very good young man. Sometime ago a strange circumstance which came into his life seem to greatly affect him. He became very much interested in religious work. He left recently for Oakaloosa to attend a Holiness meeting and was supposed to be walking back this way and distributing tracts, of which he carried a number when he met his death.

Mrs. Conger, the mother, had a stroke of paralysis several years ago and it is feared that the sad occurance will prove a serious shock and the many friends and acquaintances of the family are greatly sorrowed. Roy had several brothers. --- Centerville, Ia., Citizen.

RECOLLECTIONS: L. Keith Conger, son of Charles Marion Conger, of Cincinnati, IA wrote to Maxine Leonard on 20 Nov 1973.

I have a picture of my grandpa, Enos [Conger] and his wife. I have a cane handed down, that Enos made. I have visited his grave many times. He lies in a little cemetery south of Cincinnati, [IA].

My father, Charles M., was born in a log cabin east of Cincinnati in 1887. He is still living. When he was a boy his dad used to pack up the family in a covered wagon and go to the Indian Territory out in Oklahoma. They made several such trips and would work in the hay fields of the cattle ranches nearby. What adventures he and his three brothers, Jesse, Pearl and Frank would have.

They hunted and fished with the Indian boys, rode ponies, swam and 'rassled Indian style. All this was passed on to my brother and myself on long winter evenings as we watched the flickering flames of fire.

My dad would also play the harmonica for us and could play the organ too. His favorite tune was, "The Oklahoma Sunset Waltz." I will never forget it if I live to be thousand years old.

I own and live on a 200 acre farm south of Exline, [IA]. This farm has been in the family (both sides of the house) for almost 100 years. Eighty acres of it was purchased from an heir to the Jospeh Leonard (who married Margaret Conger) estate.

We are members of the Exline Christian Church which was established in a hayloft in a barn on the John Conger farm in 1852. John was brother to Enos and used the bard as an underground railway station for the slaves in pre-civil war days.

I have always been proud of and claimed a relationship to all Congers, and am so pleased to have this excellent book to verify it.

BIOGRAPHY: Cincnnati's 'Golden Poet' says piano got him started, by Marlys Thomas, Staff Writer

To make a long story short - his "Doc Sturdivant" piano made him a poet.

L. Keith Conger of rural Cincinnati, [IA] is an award-winning poet. This month he was notified by the World of Poetry's Board of Directors that his poem, "Ode To A Cookbook," had earned him the Golden Poet Award, the highest honor that World of Poety bestows on a poet.

What makes "Ode to a Cookbook" an award-winning poem?" Conger was asked. "People relate to it all over the country," he said of his humorous poem about the tribulations of eating. "People are mainly well=fed and they ride instead of walk, so they can relate to it."

Conger, who owns and operates a 200-acre century family farm south of Exline, [IA], says he began writing poety about three years ago. How he got started writing poetry has to do with his piano.

"I play the piano," Conger says, "and I read music. I sang for five years at the Golden Age Care Center, so I know my rhythm and my meter."

Conger claims to be a self-taught pianist. "I've been playing the piano since 1944," he says of the year he acquired his "Doc Sturdivant" piano, which still sits in his home. "My brother-in-law, Ford Kerby, bought it for me at an auction sale that year, because I couldn't afford it myself," Conger says of the piano, for which a price of $38 was paid. "I paid it off by working for him and vulcanizing tires at his garage. I earned $1 for each tire I finished, so I vulcanized 38 tires to pay off my piano."

Then Conger has to laugh about what his brother[-in-law] didn't tell him till later. "He told me years later that every one of those tires blew out," Conger said.

"But I still have that piano," he informs. "I wouldn't part with it for the world."

Using his self-taught piano skills and reading lots of music, Conger realized that he could also become a self-taught poet, because in reality all songs are just poems put into music.

"I like to write lyrical poems and ..."

Ode To A Cookbook
L.K. Conger
For those of us who love to eat
This little book cannot be beat
For just plain food or gourmet treat
It is superb

But if its pages much we use
And then to stoop and tie our shoes
We huff and puff and weeze and wooze
Alas, alack - our handsome figure
Is gonna get big and big and bigger
Dare we refooze

We stand afore a glass reflective
And stare aghast with grim perspective
"This can't be us - it is defective"
O woe is we

And so to work with pan and pot
To fix it cold or fix it hot
Proceed along with some redoubt
To serve it up or throw it out
It is elective

RECOLLECTIONS:
In a 6 Jul 1996 letter, Keith Conger wrote: "Sigel" [son of Elias Gregory and Margaret Conger] got the home farm that Enos and Mary Jane had. Enos and Mary Jane were well to do farmers, indeed. I have a 200 acre farm. My folks sold it to me in 1964. I am the 3rd generation to own it and it has long been a century farm. I don't grow crops anymore and hire the hay baled. I run a small herd of hereford cattle. I have arthritis and walk slowly, but I keep on top of things, keep the fences in repair and of course can do tractor repair. I have 3.

This forenoon I climbed 2/3 up a sheet metal roof on a high barn and nailed down a loose sheet, so I can still do a few things. I nailed that roofing on in Oct. of 1950, with help of course, from my Dad and brother Charles.

Charles (Chuck) is a preacher at the Christian Church at Green Top, MO. He owns and lives on a 430 acre farm north of Blakesburg, Iowa.
[Note: A "century farm" must be in the same family name for 3 or more generations. Enos Conger, b. 1814, gave or sold Joseph Wallace Conger the land. Siegel Conger probably got the portion where the old homestead was located. Joyce Posey] (Furnished by Joyce Posey)

HOBBIES: The Pony Express by L.K. Conger
In the mighty far-flung regions of the old romantic west A problem was increasing and becoming distress To achieve communication cross the mountainous desert sand So to make of us a nation that we may united stand

Then a young man had a vision to earn immortal fame The year was 1860 - William Russell was his name A series of pony riders to quickly move the mail Across the wide expanses through summer heat and winter gale

One hundred ninety stations were set up along the trail Five hundred ponies and 80 riders - utmost mileage to avail From the hills of old St. Joseph - up along the river Platte Through the passes and the deserts to where Sacramento sat

One of the youthful riders whose memory lingers still Was known as William Cody but folks just called him Bill In Western lore immortal as he rode o'er plain and hill Into our hearts forever - our beloved Buffalo Bill

For 19 months the Indians chased them o'er the pleasant grassy land Through the mountains of the Rockies and the burning desert sand For 10 days the mail pouch traveled and only one was lost O'er a mileage of 66 and 1900 and five dollars was the cost

From April 1860 through October 1861 Our daring riders and their ponies earned their place within the sun Then a telegraph line completed - could more swift a message run The last letter was delivered - hail to them a job well done.

HOBBIES: Family Reunion by L. Keith Conger, Nov. 1997, Wright - Riggle Family Newsletter, Vol. 7
Family reunion once again
joyous fellowship is here.
To meet and greet our kith and kin
and renew old friendships dear.

To laugh and tease and to recall
last time who told the biggest one
Of all the whoppers - his was best
took the prize - the dog he won.

At noon hour to line up and eat
how everything tastes so good
Co/op dining is hard to beat
attend everyone we could.

Kids lining up with their parents
photographs - this way and thus
We take note how so apparent
everyone has aged but us.

And then the history to give
and make sure that we all know
Of the beginnings - and relive
the merry times long ago.

At last we gather 'round and sing
auld Lang Syne of yesteryear
Golden memories - teardrops bring
family reunion time is here.

CONFLICT: L. Keith Conger, of Cincinnati, IA wrote to Maxine Leonard on 15 Feb 1974.

There is a picture in the Conger book that is wrongly identified, according to my father and he swears that he knows.

It is the pictured of a so-called, David S. Conger, 1787, who md. Rebecca Sharp. My father says this is his grandpag, Enos Conger, 1814-1903, written about on pg. 164.

My father was about 15 or 16 years old when Enos died. Dad lived in the same house with him and of course knew and remembers him well.

You claim him as your great-great grandfather, and I claim him as mine. I have the same picture, given to me from Uncle Jess [Conger], who got it from Wallace, the son of Enos.

[Note by Maxine Leonard: The picture in question could be mistaken identity, as David 1787 and Enos 1814 were half-brothers. The photo was given to Henry Crowell by Edith Conger Johnson (deceased). Her father was Halleck Gettus Conger, s/o Elias Milton Conger, pictured along with two sisters, Mary Conger Crowell and Rachel Conger Brewington. The families of Enos and Halleck lived in the Centerville-Cincinnati, [IA] area.]
