OBITUARY:
"We are again called to note the departure from this life one of the pioneer and citizens of this community. Charles Powell has spent nearly a half -century in this community, and was respected by all the people who knew him, and was especially regarded by pioneer families with whom he lived and neighbored in the early days. He was known as an honest, industrious man, whose deep interest in the welfare of his family and neighbors were marked features of the long years of his life.Charles Powell was born in Carroll County, Missouri, April 7, 1858 and passed peacefully away at his home southeast of Mason City Friday, August 29, 1930, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 22 days. He was united in marriage to Rebecca Riles [sic] at Litchfield, Neb, January 25,1885 [sic 26]. To this union six children, 4 sons and 2 daughters. Benjamin, Ruth, John, Rose, William and Jesse.
John, Ruth and Benjamin preceeded their father to the better world. Besides his wife and sons, William and Jesse and daughter Rose, he leaves to mourn his death one brother, Pete Powell, of Cox City, Oklahoma, and two grandchildren, and other near relatives and a host of friends.
Mr. Powell came to Nebraska in 1883, settling in Sherman county before the railroad reached there and before the town of Litchfield was established. He was a active participant in the early day affairs of this community, assisting the needy and doing his share as a good citizen, After living 37 years in Sherman county he moved to Custer county in 1920, and where he resided when the final summons came. He leaves the heritage of an honest man and a good citizen to the community and to his family the memory of a kind husband and loving, indulgent father.
The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Litchfield Sunday afternoon, with Rev. H.H. Todd, pastor, in charge, and interment made in the Litchfield cemetery."

(Source: Mills Co., Iowa Marriage Book 5, page 25, couple #599 - furnished by Joyce Posey)BIOGRAPHY:
"The Plattsmouth Journal tells of a narrow escape Charles Powell had from drowning one day last week. He had been to the Nebraska metropolis and imbibed rather freely of their fire water. Upon setting out late in the afternoon for his home on this side of the Missouri river he settled down in his little row boat and was sound asleep. He drifted down stream and was presently seen to fall overboard. Luckily Emma and Minnie Ault saw his predicament and notified their brother Charles Ault and Malon Richardson. These men started down the river and reached Powell just in time. He was clinging to the side of his boat and was about all in when the men reached him. Powell was in the icy water for nearly an hour."
