RESIDENCES: As of Feb 1911, near Cordell, KS

OBITUARY:
Isaac Conger, son of James and Elizabeth Conger, was born July 26, 1847, at Maryette, Monroe county, Ohio. He departed this life Monday evening, March 28, 1932, at 9:30 o'clock. He was married to Emma Thompson at Bradyville, Page county, Iowa, March 12, 1871, and moved to Jewell county, Kans., in the year of 1872, coming to Rooks county [KS] in 1878, where they purchased and maintained for 54 years a most hospitable home.

To this union were born nine children: James L., Lidia Estella, Russell Addison, Jennie Nevada, William T., Marshall M., Isaac, Cloie Ethel and Vesta Lee. Of these, six are left to mourn his departure, Lidia, Russell and Isaac having preceded him; also his wife preceded him, having passed away, March 17, 1929.

Mr. Conger came west with his young bride 60 years ago, making the journey into this then unsettled country in an ox team and wagon, and two hundred dollars were they possessions. Only those who have had experience in this way can know anything about the courage and fortitude necessary to overcome and succeed as he has.

It is not possible to do justice to this man in written word. Sixty years of social, business and religious contact caused his exemplary life to shine brighter. Generous was he, always ready to help all worthy enterprises, especially generous to the cause of religious enterprises. He was converted to Jesus his Lord, uniting with the M.E. church at Codell, [KS], afterward transfering his membership to Natoma.

He was greatly interested in the welfare of his state, having served as a commissioner, also elected to the legislature at two different times.

He was a great lover of company, and delighted in little folks. His children numbered nine, and there are just ten grand children, also three great grandchildren. There are three brothers and three sisters still living. Sherman and Elias of Ollie, Iowa, Will of Lyons, Nebr., Mella Lemon, Blair, Nebr., Addie Clie, Otego, Kans., and Mrs. Florence Clair, Natoma, Kans.

The funeral service was conducted at the home, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. F.L. Courter, former pastor gave a very touching address. Mr. and Mrs. Crane sang three beautiful appropriate songs.

The family lot at East Paradise cemetery was the scene of another service conducted by the Masoni lodges of Codell, Natoma and Plainville. A large crowd was present to show their sympathy. The floral offerings were exceptionally fine, leaving no doubt of the high esteem in the minds of all for this beloved neighbor and friend.

BIOGRAPHY: Isaac Conger
Isaac Conger was born at Marietta, Marion County, Ohio [sic, There seems to be some confusion about where he was born. Marietta, is in Washington county, Ohio. REH] on July 26, 1847. His parents, James and Elizabeth, were the parents of eleven children, which included two sets of twins. Isaac had a twin brother, John.

When Isaac was nine years of age, the family decided to go west, and settled on a homestead near Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa, where he lived until his marriage on March 12, 1871 to Emma Jane Thompson. She was born near Bradyville, Page County, Iowa on February 12, 1850. Her father was killed when Emma was very young, and her mother, Eliza, married Wesley Farrens.

Isaac and Emma ventured farther west, homsteading on the banks of White Rock Creek near Burr Oak, Jewell County, Kansas in 1817. Their trip was made in a covered wagon drawn by two owen, and their possessions were a few pieces of walnut furniture made by Emma's step-father, Wesley Farrens. They also had a dog, pig, and a cow.

Their first home was a dugout where their first son was born. It was not unusual for friendly, but curious, Indians to visit them. Most of their meat was buffalo meat. Isaac would sometimes be away for several days at a time hunting buffalo, leaving his young wife and son alone at the dugout. Pioneers accepted these things as the usual type of occurrences.

In 1878 they sold their claim and migrated to Rooks County, [KS] where they purchased land near a little town known as Old Motor. Here the first home was in a dugout also, until a stone house could be constructed. Later a large frame house was built, and in time the litte stone house became a bunk house for ranch help. In this east Paradise Township home, in the southeastern part of Rooks County, the nine children were reared. Cattle and crops were the order of the times in this part of Kansas, and the size of the ranch increased over the years to indicate prosperity and industry.

Ike, as he was known, served his community as a leader, as a commissioner, and twice as a member of the state legislature. Such successes of early times could seldom happen but for the strong support of a wife and mate such as Emma. She was the hub of the wheel around whom her family and friends gathered for strength and guidance.

The Conger family were members of the Codell Methodist Church, later transferring to the Natoma church when a storm destroyed the Codell church building. They were active members always.

On March 12, 1921, Isaac and Emma celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with many relatives and dear friends coming long distances to congratulate them. Seven of their nine children were with them. The two sons missing from the family circle wree: Russell A. and Isaac Jr., both of whom died as young men.

The Congers, their children and families have taken part in, and seen many beginnings and developments in Rooks County since 1878 when they first came to call this good area "home." Their lives have gone with this growth. Today none of the children are living, and but five of their grandchildren remain to remember Isaac and Emma.

Isaac died March 28, 1932, near Codell, Kansas. His wife, Emma, died May 15, 1929 at home near Codell. Burial was in East Paradise Cemetery.

Olen Allen, adopted son of Benoni and Sarah Allen, was born March 17th 1879 and departed this life Oct. 13, [18]'92, aged 13y, 6m, 27d.

He leaves a father, mother and two brothers to mourn for him.

He is gone from us forever. We never again shall see his smiling face not hear his cheerful voice calling us to join in his merriment; but, kind friends and sorrowing relatives, let us be comforted by the hope that he is safe in the arms of a dear Savior who has said: "Suffer little children to come unto me, for such is the kingdom of heaven." Let it comfort us to know that he is done with the troubles and trials of this world. He has finished his mission on earth and has gone to that home prepared for him in heaven.

Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which none ever wake to weep.
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
