RECOLLECTIONS: John Braxton Conger's son, Douglas wrote:
"John B. [Conger] remembers living in Tennessee, although his family left there when he was six. They lived in a log cabin which did not have glass windows and [he] can remember the river boats going up and down with cargo. The reason for going to Texas was because an uncle, Isaac Ross, was there and painted a picture of greener pastures. Isaac Ross had a brother-n-law there before him and he went for the same reason. This change of location took place in 1888. Wiley landed there with 50 cents in his pocket."In 1907, John B. and wife, Estella, went to New Mexico. The reason for going was because the state opened up for homestead. They took out a homestead and proved up on it. The first year corn did well; the second year the corn was about two feet high and received about a foot of snow -- that was all for the corn. Estella held down the homestead while John worked as a carpenter in Tucumcari and came home for weekends. The population of Tucumcari was approximately 3,000 with six or seven grocery stores and twenty-eight saloons. There was quite a lot of shooting, as there was a big boom due to the homestead influx.
"The next move was to Oklahoma, which took place in 1908. The next important move was to Merced Falls, California, in 1935, where he worked for Yosemite Sugar Pine Lumber Co.
"Today, at 87 years he has remarkably good health and has never had any serious illness."
One 20 Oct 1969, Douglas [Conger] wrote: "My father is a character. My mother died Jan. 5th, 1969 and father keeps his own house, does his cooking and washing and rides his three-wheel bicycle all over town to do his shopping and visiting. He has excellent health and will live to a hundred if he does not get rear-ended on the bicycle."
