RECOLLECTIONS: Joseph Clyde Conger, b. 1914 writes:
"I remember my grandmother most because she was such a remarkable woman. Deeply religious, active, alive and very alert even to the end. She and my grandfather raised a wonderful family of their own and then borrowed some from the orphan's home to raise."I'm sure they had little of earthly value but a lot of the spiritual things.
"As an example of grandmother's love of life, she suffered broken limbs at an advanced age and healed completely. Later she became addicted with the 'tic della rue' and the intense pain could be relieved only with opiates. When she realized that she was in danger of becoming a drug addict she arranged for this then dangerous operation in which the trigeminal nerve was severed inside the skull. Of course this paralyzed the side of her face but relieved the pain and she became normal again.
"As kids, my sister, Sue, and I were never so happy as when we planned a visit to grandma or Aunt Susie and Uncle Ben. These were our favorites, but we loved them all very much. We visited Aunt Susie in Drew, Mississippi this summer (1969)."
