OCCUPATION-RELATIONSHIP: The Conger Funeral Home of Arcadia, LA was the outgrowth of Sidney Algernon Conger's furniture and hardware store investment of 1889. He trimmed caskets and in 1928 he and his son, William Edmond Conger, 1893, hired an embalmer. Later, William's sons, William Edmond, 1922, and Sidney Lamar, 1924, a mortician, were partners in the funeral home. They also owned the Mutual Burial Benefit Company (for both Negro and white). In 1955, they organized the Pelican State Life Insurance Company. In 1961, they formed the Auburndell Realty Corp., dealing in timber, minerals and rentals. They were also connected with the Citizens Bank and Trust.
