Hazel Dell RandolphBIOGRAPHY:
Grandma Hazel Dell [(Randolph) Connett], was born near Perry, IA. and grew up on a farm. She was the youngest child. She married at age 16, and she and Grandpa John lived with her parents for a number of years and helped farm. They were sharecroppers near Rock Falls, IA for a few years, and later they moved to Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., IA.Grandma worked as a maid at the Hanford Hotel, for many years. She made many loyal friends there and they were so good to me whenever I went there to visit her. She worked so hard, and had very enlarged knees due to arthritis which made working almost unbearable for her.
She was modest in her style of dress, but always wore perfume and lipstick, and a girdle, and smelled of powder. She never had a washing machine when I was growing up. She scrubbed clothes on a rub board in the deep kitchen sink that hung on the wall, and sent out the linens and items that needed to be dry cleaned.
Our apartment was small but always very clean and comfy, and grandma was a very good cook and always made me oatmeal for breakfast with half and half on it which I dunked toast in. When I was very young she would braid my long hair and walk me down the alley to the daycare, as my mother had to go to work early. I remember her rocking me in her rocking chair, and I always felt warm and cuddled and she hummed and kissed me on my neck.
Grandma had a sister, Lida, who was married to Roy Halling, and I remember going on 2 trips with them to visit her near Perry, Dallas Co., IA. when I was less than ten years old. I don't think Grandma was able to visit with her brothers and sisters very often.
After grandpa died in 1956, grandma took me to California to live with my mother. I was 15 years old that summer. She went back to Iowa, and I missed her terribly. After awhile she moved into the Park Retirement Hotel. She was retired from working by then.
She was very lonesome for grandpa, and wrote many letters to me and was anxious for any news from us all. She made some good friends in the hotel where she lived over the next few years, but was very sad when her best friend, a Mr. Gunther, passed away.
A short time after her friend died, she became ill with colon cancer, and went to California to her daughter, Verna Lynch's home as she couldn't take care of herself anymore. I went to visit her with my daughter, Tamera, and I knew when I left that I'd never see her alive again. She died in a hospital in southern California and is buried in a cemetery in the city of Bell.
I know she's in Heaven with grampa.

John William ConnettAKA: Called Will when he was young and Bill when he was older.
BIOGRAPHY:
John William Connett, was called "Will" when he was young, and "Bill" when he was older. He was born in a dugout on the prairie, near the small town of Norton, Norton Co., KS. His parents went to Kansas to homestead, and were probably accompanied there by his father's sister, Josephine, and his half brothers, George, and Nimrod McHone, who were the first children of Margaret Rose McHone before she married John Francis Connett. He was a wonderful grandfather, short, red haired, (bald on top & gray by the time I came along). He had blue-green eyes. He loved baseball, ring fights, and playing cards, dominos, and checkers. He was once a champion checker player in our town of Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., IA. He taught me all the bird calls, and told me many exciting stories of his trapping and hunting exploits. He still ran a trap line after he moved to town. He never let me win at checkers.
He was a baseball player and met grama at a game and they married when she was only 16 years old. They were sharecroppers when their children were young, and raised hogs when they lived at Rock Falls, IA., but lost them to cholera and had to move to town to make a living. They had six children in school.
Grandpa worked at Jacob E. Decker & Sons Packing Plant where he cleaned out railroad cars after they brought in cattle and hogs. It was a terrible job, but I never heard him complain about it. He wasn't well educated, but he was a wise man. He smiled alot and laughed often and was very loving. All of his children referred to him as "Daddy" even when they were old. They adored him, as did I. He never had alot of money but he was a successful man.
He cooked the best lima bean soup that I ever ate, and when I was young, he sat on the side of my bed, heard my prayers, and rubbed my back until I went to sleep.
Grampa would never let anyone take a photo of him full face, he would always turn his face to the side. He never gave a reason for it, either. He wore his hat in the house very often, and had a Model A at one time. While I was still very young, he bought a brown 1937 Chevy, and I loved to sit in it and pretend that I could drive. Grampa never made me get out of his car when I was "going to work." He loved me very much, and he was the only father I ever knew. He chased me around a lilac bush once with a razor strap. I was laughing, guess I wasn't too afraid of him or it. Grandpa never spanked me but he told me he was going to do it sometimes, but I didn't believe it.
When I was a child, I could always ask him for a nickle, or a dime, and he always gave it to me, which I promptly spent at Kropmans Deli, across the street.
The day before grampa died, he heard me say I saw a pretty skirt at a store, and he dug in a drawer at the hospital and gave me his last dollars. I remember I'd taken him daffodils or jonquils, that day. He loved them.
Grampa John died at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, IA. on 16 Mar 1956, on a cold sunny morning. He had colon cancer that had spread. Grama was just getting ready to go to the hospital before she went to work at the Hanford Hotel, when the call came that grampa had taken a turn for the worst. He died before she could get there. Aunt Verna, said he had been in a coma all night but opened his eyes very large, turned his head slightly, smiled, and was gone. I think he saw an angel.
He bought Grandma some new living room furniture shortly before his death, didn't want to leave her without something good. He also bought a TV. He wrote a note to his dog, (childhood pet?) and left him everything. We knew the med. was very strong, and maybe he was hallucinating close to the last time that he went back to the hospital.
He received Christ as his Savior, a few short weeks before his death, led to Jesus by his brother-in-law, Oliver "Elze" Gorham, husband of his sister, Myrtle.
He's buried next to his son, Lacy (Layson) at Elmwood Cem., Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co. IA. He has a bronze, flat, grave marker with acorns on it.
