Stephen Conger, when about 17, accompanied his father, Capt. George Parker Conger, in the posse that drove the St. Albans Raiders [St. Albans, VT] back across the border into Canada.They lived on Fairfield Street, across from St. Mary's Church, where a convent now stands. They moved to the farm in Georgia [VT] when Steve was about 23 years old. The deed is dated December 1869.
When Capt. Conger married his third wife, Catherine, he went to live at the Center in her house. Stephen was given a life lease on the home farm, with the understanding that everything was to be divided among the grandchildren when Stephen died.
Stephen was named after his father, George, and his mother's brother, Stephen Basford.

OBITUARY:
Henry R. Conger died Saturday morning [15 May 1897] at his residence on South Union Street. He had suffered from a long illness from pleurisy which developed fatally into pneumonia. He was very rational up to within a few minutes of his death, but was attacked by a convulsion during which he died.Mr. Conger was the son of Mr. & Mrs. William R. Conger, and was born in this city, May 15, 1847. Later the family moved to St. Albans [VT], but he returned to the city in 1863 and engaged in business with his uncle, the late Amasa Drew, which partnership continued for several years. He then bought out the business of Drew & Conger, and organized the Consumer's Ice Co. He was manager of the American Sign Co. and was also interested in many of the prominent business organizations of the city. In 1894, he began the real estate and insurance business of which he made an eminent success.
