4108. Clarence La Forest Conger

Clarence LaForest Conger

PARENTS: Lucien West Conger and Elizabeth Everett Brown

BIOGRAPHY: History of Northeast Missouri - Walter Williams, ED, Vol. II Clarence LaForest Conger, postmaster of Unionville, Putnam county, Missouri, was born on June 16, 1855 in Galesburg, Illinois, and is the son of Lucien W. and Elizabeth (Everett) Conger.

The father was born in 1823 in New York state and is the son of Uzziah Conger of the same place, a man of German ancestry. (This is debatable and inconclusive.) He migrated from his native state of Illinois in 1839, and settled on a farm near Galesburg with his family.

Lucien W. Conger did not establish his home in Unionville until 1873 and in that year he organized the first bank ever established in Putnam county, that institution being named the Putnam County Bank. In recent years it has merged with the Marshall National Bank. Mr. Conger was officially connected with the bank until 1878, when he retired from active business pursuits. He died in 1902.

There were three children born to Lucien Conger and his wife, namely: Emma N.H. of Orange CA; Laura Cordelia, the wife of R.H. Spicer of Viola, IL and Clarence of this brief review.

Lucien W. was reared in the state of Illinois and there married Elizabeth Everett. For a number of years they moved about considerably, before they finally became established in Unionville. For 3 years after their marriage they lived in Peoria, then returned to Galesburg for a year, whereupon they moved to Kewanee, and in 1866 to Chicago. He was engaged in the jewelry business, and in the great fire of 1871 he lost everything. Soon thereafter he located in Oneida, IL there engaging in the banking business, where he continued until he located in Unionville.

Clarence Conger was educated in the public schools of Chicago and Kewanee, for a period of five years afrter he left school he was employed as cashier of the Putnam County Bank and from 1878 to 1880 he was employed in Chicago. On returning home to Unionville he engaged in farming pursuites and was thus occupied for a few years in which organized the Republican Printing Co., in 1902, becoming secretary and treasurer of the concern, as well as general manager of the business, and he has since to be thus associated with it.

In 1906 Mr. Conger was appointed postmaster of Unionvill, and he is still the incumbent of that position. The office is of the second class variety, and maintains eight rural free delivery routes.

Mr. Conger is fraternally identified with the Masonic Order, is a Royal Arch Mason, and a Knight of Pythias, also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Knights of the Macabees. He is a member of the Universalist Church, and politically, he renders allegiance to the Republican party.

In 1878 Mr. Conger was united in marriage with Frances V. Cook, a resident of Oneida, Illinois, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Cook of that place. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Conger, Erwin C. who is foreman of the Republican Printing Company, of which is father is the head, and Bertha, who shares the home of her parents yet.

Mr. Conger is on of the dependable citizens of Unionville, and the family is one which is held in the highest esteem in the community which has represented their home for so many years. (Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. II, p. 69 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

As of September 2014, I couldn't find any information on the Internet about either man having children. As a matter of fact, it appears that Samuel might not have married.
