BIOGRAPHY: A Canadian Conger Grain Elevator
Ira Conger, Charles B. Sanborn and W.H. Petersmeyer from the Cushing, IA area came [to Canada] by excursion train sponsored by the Luse Land Company of St. Paul, MN. They traveled up the Soo Line Railroad up to Moose Jaw in 1904 and 1905. ... They were attracted to reports of rich soil and the endless flat prairie of the Regina plains. In 1905, they purchased farmland at Rouleau, Drinkwater and Pence. The men correctly assumed that a marketplace for grain would be needed. Conger, Sanborn and Petersmeyer organized a grain and lumber business named Conger and Company, Ltd. with the head office located in Rouleau. In 1905 a grain elevator was constructed in Drinkwater. In 1906 an elevator was constructed in Rouleau and a lumberyard in Drinkwater. In 1907, they constructed a lumberyard in Rouleau. Storage sheds for oats were built in Rouleau in 1905 and 1906. The elevator and lumber yard continued under the original until 1924 when the company was dissolved. ... The elevator operated in Rouleau under the Conger Sanborn name from 1924-1963. It was later demolished. The Congers returned to Iowa in 1924.
