RECOLLECTIONS: On 6 Feb 1947, Horace Glenn Conger wrote to Mrs. Henry L. Monat, 1036 Bryant St., Palo Alto, Calif., as follows:"My Dear Cousin: I have delayed answering your letter for the reason that I had so little to offer in the way of assistance. First of all, the Bible which you refer to is doubtless packed away among the effects of my sister in Dubuque, who is the one referred to by brother, Ralph, as being in a sanatarium. This all happened so suddenly that it has taken my breath away. She had a nervous breakdown and it seemed the humane thing to do to place her where she could be taken care of. It isn't a public institution and I pray that it may continue to be a private place - at my expense, for those things are tragic, at best.
Anyway, the Bible you refer to I have seen many times and does not contain any reference to who married who and when. It is one of those old fashioned documents which simply shows the birth date, death date and names, but it may be that I can add little to what you are trying to compile. A good many years back I had occasion - in connection with applications for insurance - to have a record of the names, birth and death dates of my ancestors and I'm going to give you some of that information.
My father's father's name was Ephraim Conger, born Oct. 25, 1795 and died Aug. 8, 1847. My grandmother's name was Almira Conger, born Sep. 13, 1799 and died May 26, 1873. In your list you have a statement that they had six sons, but do not include my father, Edwin Jerome, born Dec. 18, 1841, and died Oct. 25, 1907.
There is another brother by the name of Marvin, whose birth and death date I do not have, but he was the one that became enamoured with a spiritualist and left my Aunt Mary, and as the story went - in my boyhood days, she had a big going away supper the night he was to leave her. That sounds a bit like Hollywood, doesn't it?
Well, some years ago a man came to my office in Des Moines and claimed to be my cousin, living in Winterset, Iowa. I was somewhat disturbed about it for I knew of no cousin that I had anywhere in these parts, but I allowed him to come into my private office and was prepared for any emergency by having a heavy ink-well in my hand to use if it became necessary. Ha. This is quite a joke to me now, but wasn't then. It developed that he was a son of Marvin's and had taken his mother, Mary, with him to Winterset and had lived there for a number of years, as a tin-smith.
He related some interesting things about my father so I knew that he was real. Had taught father to swim, by holding him up with his hand while father paddled. This is not of much interest, but it [is] just a reminiscence. Anyway, those are two sons of Almira that you do not show."
(Glenn went on to speak of his brother, Ralph, but part of the carbon paper had been torn off. Ralph fell when a child about four years old. A stick went into the palate of his mouth, causing his right arm to be crooked and useless.)

CHURCH_AFFILIATION: Christian Scientist
Laura E. HessRESIDENCES: As a widow, 1316 68th Street; Des Moines, IA 50311
RECOLLECTIONS: On 2 Feb 1969, widow, Laura Conger wrote to Beach Conger, saying,
"I have separated some of Papa Conger's papers somewhat, but oh, what a job. With his Masonic - Commandery, Independent Telephone papers, N.W. Bell Tel. papers, his first wife's clippings (Edith Edmonds) and what little there is about her family, I find it interesting reading. Also the way they both (H.G. and Edith) helped in the Red Cross during World War II and the Bond raising, food cards, etc., I must say the first Mrs. Conger was quite a lady to behold."In reading some of the information I've found Mr. Conger loved his first wife as much as he did me, but the circumstances were different. He worked while he was married to the first Mrs. Conger and he was retired when he married me.
"My husband was so fed up with his going to the Des Moines Club (of which he was a charter member) even before the building was built -- have a drink, a bite of lunch with some of his friends, playing cards all afternoon and pool. So therefore when we were married he wanted me by his twenty-four hours per day.
"So we spent over 19 years together, twenty-four hours per day, 365 days per year. Therefore you can see I miss him very much, but wouldn't want him back the way he was suffering at the time of death. One thing his mind was keen throughout his life. He was blind the last ten years. The last thing I said to him was, "I love you, Papa." He replied, "I love you too, Mama.""
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 212 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)
RECOLLECTIONS: Mrs. Conger told Mrs. Leonard, over the telephone, that Glenn was exceptionally considerate. Once he and his first wife quarreled and he left the house for work without kissing her. He left his work in the middle of the morning to go back home and "make up." When he and Laura had differences, they never let the day end without kissing and apologizing.
