BIOGRAPHY:
Jesse Lyman Conger, who at the present time is one of the leading citizens and successful business men of the city of Newark, New Jersey, was born at Roseville, same state, September 25, 1867, and is the son of Theodore and Mary Elizabeth (Simonson) Conger.Jesse L. Conger, like his father and mother, was educated in the local public schools, at the start taking his place in the grades until he successfully passed the eighth, when he was duly admitted to the city high school and there practically finished his literary training with high standing and praise worthy behavior. At the conclusion of his course at high school he at once entered active business operations.
For the first year and a half he was engaged in the stamping business, but in 1897 he became a banker, which pursuit he followed ever since with both unusual success and occupational distinction. First he was connected with the Seaboard National Bank of New York City, serving with distinction in various official positions and doing much to expand its reputation and improve its environments.
In 1914, he became connected with the Mutual Bank of Roseville and from the start took an active concern in the development of the business. For four years he has served this banking institution in the important capacity of cashier. He then became connected with the Liberty Trust Co., and at the present date is its treasurer. In that important capacity he has greatly aided the company in building up an excellent reputation, and at the same time he has managed to amass a comfortable fortune and attain a high reputation for his faithfulness and capacity.
He has likewise attained distinction in the walks and welfare of civic and public advancement and expansion. At the present time he is a prominent member of the Chamber of Commerce and is highly regarded by his business associates.
During the World War, when the country was convulsed with dismay and perplexity, he took an active part in assisting Uncle Sam to quell the militarists of Central Europe. He entered the service and for six months served with credit at Indian Head, Maryland, as an aid in construction work for the government. He was finally dismissed with a high standing and distinction.
He and the family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church. At the present time he is treasurer of the Liberty Square B. & L. Association.

BIOGRAPHY:
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, John Henry Conger tried several times to enlist, but did not succeed because he was only 14 years old. His parents removed from New Jersey to Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin and there he was successful in enrolling in Co. E, 49th Wisconsin Vol. Inf., in which company he served until he was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri, 8 Nov 1865, at the close of the war.After the war he returned to Newark, New Jersey to make his own start in life. There he entered the employ of Stephens & Condit Transportation Co., with whom he remained until 1871. He then went to work for Sawyer & Fisher Co. of Sayreville, Middlesex, NJ, with whom he remained 15 years. He then engaged in the building material and timber business for himself, at New Brunswick, NJ and followed this line of business until he gave it up to enter public life.
He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church.
In 1894, he was elected clerk of the Middlesex county court, which position he held for 15 years, and with his retirment, he had the confidence and respect of the citizens of the county.
John Henry Conger had been active in business all of his life, and for the past twenty years (as of 1905) he had been a member of the Board of Directors and Vice President of the New Brunswick Trust Company. He was also President of the Young Men's Building and Loan Association of New Brunswick, having been the head of this institution since its organization. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and Vice-president of St. Peter's General Hospital, of New Brunswick.
He had been a Commander of the New Brunswick G.A.R. Post No. 67 for 14 years and had served as State Commander of the G.A.R.
On 5 Feb 1933 he and his wife celebrated their 54th Wedding Anniversary with a gathering of their children.
