RECOLLECTIONS: James Greenwood Conger, 1907, wrote of his father, John Leonard Conger, to Miss Cornelia Conger of Chicago on 29 Nov 1966: "Many thanks for your nice note of the 19th. I have been practicing law in Chicago and have lived in or near the city for the past thirty-five years. During that time, on numerous occasions, friends and others have inquired whether I was in any way related to you. My father always claimed that anyone with the name CONGER was at least a fifth cousin of anyone else with the same name. [Note: Cornelia Conger might have been the daughter of William Perez Conger and Emily Wright Lyon, if so, she was the 6th cousin of James Greenwoord Conger. Their common ancestor was John Belconger. REH]
"My father spent two years at the University of Nebraska and then taught school for several years to accumulate enough capital to go on with his education. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1904 and then attended the University of Wisconsin on a Fellowship where he received a Master's Degree and in 1907, a Doctor's Degree in American History. I was born in Madison Wisconsin about the time he was completing his thesis. He then accepted an appointment as Professor of History and Government at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois where I grew up and where my sisters, Amy and Virginia were born.
"Except for brief interludes as a visiting professor at Harvard, the University of Michigan and the University of California, my father continued at Knox College as Professor of History and Head of the Department until his retirement about 1945.
"He served as an alderman, mayor and president of the school board in Galesburg, always in a reform and what in those days was considered a liberal tradition. While not a crusader type, he staunchly espoused what he regarded as worthy causes, particularly those which had cultural aspects. He just as staunchly opposed what in those days in a small midwestern, rather back-water community, was regarded as evil such as saloons, public gambling and other such vices. Over the opposition of the prevailing establishment, he did much to clean up and elevate the cultural environment of the community.
"Without going into his other many achievements, it has always seemed to me that they were such, and the respect in which he was held in the community was such, that so far as I am concerned, he could well have been considered the primus in a new line of Congers. Paradoxically, he never gave up trying to find out something about his antecdent and collateral relatives."
(His entire lineage was in the records.)
