Moses Randolph

PARENTS: Moses FitzRandolph and Rachel Hull

NAME:
According to Sue Reddell, Moses Fitz Randolph dropped the "Fitz" because he was related to the King of England and wasn't a Loyalist. The King had sent Edmund Fitz Randolph, another relative of the King, to America to act as a spy for him. Moses died in 1776, possibly in the Revolutionary War. None of his children used the "Fitz," although some did use the initial "F." to signify it. The brothers of Moses and their childrn kept it. This use of the surname, Randolph, also results in confusion between them and the Randolph family of Virginia, which is of Scottish descent. [Note: No citations to sources provided. REH]

"While excavating the right of way of the south-bound railroad on the farm of Mr. H.L. Holmes in Healing Springs Township, this county [Rowan, now Davidson], Mr. A.K. Lookabill, who has employment on the new road, unearthed an ancient grave wherein reposed the remains of one, Jonathan Conger, so the inscription on the stone ran, who was among the early settlers on this section.

"The railroad will run directly through this graveyard, and it may be that other graves will be forced to give up their dead to the call of progress.

"This particular grave was six feed deep, with a vault of 3 1/2 feet. The bones were intact and properly arranged, with the arms, according to the old custom, parallel with the body, instead of crossed, as is the present day custom. The hair was well preserved, although the date of the stone stated the man died, May 7, 1793, more than 116 years ago. The date of his birth was given as Jan. 22, 1732, his age being 61 years, three months and sixteen days. On the stone also was his message from the 18th century to the 20th century railroad builders, whose surveyors had led them into the old-time burying ground:

"Remember, man, as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I."

Mary Ross

Mary Ross

PARENTS-REFERENCE: The parents of Mary Ross were Isaac Ross and Jean Brown.
Some of genealogical data of Charles Leslie Conger was shared with Mrs. W.R. Wright (Anne Julia (Mims) Wright of Jackson, MS, born 1876, who, in 1911, published a genealogy about the Ross family of North Carolina, "A record of the descendants of Isaac Ross and Jean Brown and the allied families of Alexander, Conger, Harris, Hill, King, Killingworth, Mackey, Moores, Sims, Wade, etc.". The book which is probably 233 pages is at the Library of Congress, Call Number: CS71.R825 1911.

CEMETERY: There is another Conger Cemtery across Abbott's Creek and about 1/2 mile away from the Conger Cemetery where John and Zipporah Conger are buried. This cemetery was in Rowan Co., NC at one time and is probably in Davidson Co., NC now. Here "we find the only tombstone whose inscription is legible, bearing the following: "Mary Conger, deceast on Jan the 4d, 1795. Was born Jan the 28d 1751." This Mary Conger was [nee], Mary Ross, daughter of Isaac and Jean (Brown) Ross, who married John Conger, Jr., son of John Conger 1708. In another grave next to hers, and with a tombstone exactly like that which marks the grave of Mary, probably reposes the remains of her husband John, although the inscriptions has peeled off.
