Joseph Fitz Randolph

Joseph Fitz Randolph

PARENTS: Edward FitzRandolph and Elizabeth Blossom

AKA: Joseph Fitz Randolph; Joseph Fitzrandolph

BIRTH-NAME: William Reitweisner listed the birth date as, 1 Mar 1656 and spelled the name, Joseph FitzRandolph.

RELATIONSHIP-EMIGRATION: It is said that Thomas Blossom, the maternal grandfather of Joseph Fitz Randolph, came to Salem, Mass., in 1629 on The Second Mayflower.
(Furnished by Robert C. Manning, Jr.)

EMIGRATION: From Massachusetts.
His [Nathaniel FitzRandolph's] brothers, John, Joseph, Thomas and Benjamin, just mentioned, had moved to Piscataway [NJ] ten years earlier in 1668-9 and were all of the Baptist persuasion except Benjamin. The emigration of this family to New Jersey was prompted by the severe enactments of the court of the old colonies, prohibiting the free exercise of individual consciences, compelling every person to sustain by tax the established Church worship, and imposing banishment upon any who opposed infant baptism.
(Source: History of the First Baptist Church of Piscataway Stelton, New Jersey, 1889, by Oliver B. Leonard, Esq.)

BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph Fitz Randolph, the next oldest, born in 1656, was father of twelve children by his wife, Hannah Conger, a member of one of the Woodbridge families. None of this familiar name attained to greater usefulness in the Church and colony than their immediate descendants. To verify the statement would only require the mention of the heirs of his son, Joseph, who married Rebecca Drake; and his daughter, Hannah, who married Andrew Drake; and his son, Jonathan, whose wife was Margaret Manning; and his daughter, Prudence, who married Nathaniel Manning.
(Source: History of the First Baptist Church of Piscataway Stelton, New Jersey, 1889, by Oliver B. Leonard, Esq.)

RELATIONSHIP: The 44th President of the United States, Barrack Obama, Jr. is the 9th great grandnephew of Joseph Fitz Randolph. Their common ancestors are Edward Fitz Randolph and Elizabeth Blossom.
(Source: Calculated by RootsMagic for researcher Richard E. Henthorn)

EMIGRATION-FATHER: Edward Fitz Randolph, the father of Joseph Fitz Randolph, came from England to Acituate, Mass., in 1630.

PROBATE: Will proved 18 Jan 1726
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 733 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

QUESTION: How should the surname be spelled, Fitzrandolph or Fitz Randolph?

RESEARCHER: December 1999, Robert C. Manning, Jr. was a descendant of Joseph Fitz Randolph and Hannah Conger, being a descendant of their granddaughter, Grace Fitz Randolph and James Manning.

BIOGRAPHY: Supposedly signed the Oath of Allegiance to the Dutch at Piscataway in 1673. [Note: no source citation.]

7. Elizabeth Conger

Elizabeth Conger

PARENTS: The parents of Elizabeth Conger were, John Belconger and Mary Kelly.

CEMETERY: Baptist Churchyard, Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ according to Ancestral File.

ERROR: David Sutton, born 31 Jul 1703 in New Jersey is shown twice in the Ancestral File. He probably was the son of Elizabeth Conger Sutton. In the case where the error seems to be, he is listed as the husband of his mother, and the father of, Moses Sutton, who could have been his brother.

John Sutton

John Sutton

PARENTS: His parents might have been, William Sutton and Damiris Bishop. Can anyone cite a source?

MARRIAGE: 1695 at Middlesex, Piscataway, County, NJ is listed in Ancestral File. Does this make sense?

COMMENT-CONFLICT: The John Sutton family, as found in Ancestral File, of Jan 1996, was the source of the information shown here. Bluntly speaking, the family structure of the Sutton family, as shown in the Ancestral File, is a mess. Any researcher should consider the information shown in Ancestral File and in the work of Richard E. Henthorn as unverified. Much additional work would be necessary to confirm the various relationships.
(Written by Richard E. Henthorn)

AKA: David Sutton by Douglas Schueths

CHILDREN: At least four of John Sutton's sons were Baptist ministers. They moved together to Pennsylvania. They worked in or near Uniontown, PA, in conjunction with at least one Baptist Church, Mt. Moriah. [Note: No source citation given. REH]

CONFLICT-SPOUSE: William Addams Reitweisner in his "Ancestors of Jon Benet Ramsey lists John Sutton as died 20 Dec 1750 and married to Elizabeth Higgins. According to William, they had a son, David Sutton born on 31 Jul 1703 in New Jersey and died 1775 in New Jersey, who married Sarah Trembly. I list David Sutton as the sone of John Sutton and Elizabeth Conger. Further research and source citation is needed. [Written by Richard E. Henthorn on 25 Jan 2011.]

Gershom Conger

PARENTS: Gershom Conger and Ann DeSigney

OCCUPATION: Carpenter

RESIDENCES: Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ

PROBATE: Will of Gershom Conger - 29 Nov 1735
In the name of God, Amen.
The 29th day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred thirty-five, I, Gershom Conger, Junr of Woodbridge, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of New Jersey, carpenter, being very sick in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament.

That is to say, principly and first of all, I give and recomment my soul unto the hands of God, that gave it. And for my body I recomment it to the earth, to be buried in a Christianlike and decent manner, at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting that in the general resurrection, I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such wordly estate, wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise, and dispose of the same in the following matter, and form.

Impremis: It is my will, and I do order that in the first place, all of my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied.

ITEM: I will and bequeath to my dearly beloved Couzen Gershom Cawood, thirty-six pounds current money, at eight shillings to the ounce, to him and his heirs forever, to be put out to interest to the best advantage which is upon bond, and my will is, that my executors do sell five cows and their produce the next spring after date hereof, and put the money arising therefrom to the best advantage, to the sole use of my said Couzen Gershom Cawood, and his heirs until he shall arrive to the age of twenty-one years.

ITEM: I give and bequeath unto my loving brother Thomas Cawood, his heirs and assigns, one yearling bull, and one mare. I also appoint Thomas Cawood, my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament.

ITEM: I give and bequeath to my loving brother Robert Mitchell, one cow to him, his heirs and assigns. It is my will, and I do order my executor to sell my tools to enable him the better to pay my debts.

And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all any other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies and Executors, by me in any way before this time named, and willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other, to be my last will and Testament, in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this day and the year above written. GERSHOM CONGER (L.S.)
Witnessed: James Wilkison
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 208 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

WILL-PROBLEM: The will of Gershom Conger, b. 1711, is equally confusing [as the will of John Conger written 11 Jan 1711]. He died at the age of 25, unmarried. He speaks of his cousin, Gershom Cawood -- which would be correct if his mother was a Cawood and had a brother with children. He referred to himself as "Gershom, Junr," indicating his father was, Gershom, yet if named for a brother he was probably called, "Junior."
[Note: See the Will of John Belconger (Conger) and the discussion of the Codicil for a better understanding. REH]
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. II, p. 20 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

COMMENT:
Gershom Conger has been the most controversial figure in the Conger history.

This Gershom Conger was born between the time John (Primus) [Belconger] made his will on 11 Jan 1710 and the addition of the codicil to the will on 14 Jun 1712, in which codicil provision is made "for his son Gershom, who had been born since the dating of the will."

The naming of this youngest son, Gershom, has caused more or less confusion and conjecture, owing to the fact that the elder son, Gershom, was named in the will of John [Bel]Conger, primus, dated 11 Jan 1710. At this time, the elder son, Gershom, was married and was the father of, David, born 1707 [and] Phebe, born 1708. [Researcher] Charles L. Conger places this Gershom, b. 1711, as the son of Gershom, b. 1685. This seems to be the most accurate identification for several reasons.

The elder Gershom, b. 1685, died before his father, although no death date is given. If John was the father of a son born [in] 1711, this is probably why he named him after the son he lost.

It seems more reasonable to believe that John may have been having hallucinations in his last days -- and that the family pampered him in his belief that his grandson was indeed his son. The codicil reads, "being very sick in body and not expecting many hours in this life," -- and nothing about being "sound in mind."

John's first wife, Mary Kelly, was born in 1641; she and John were married in 1666, so John was probably born around 1640. It is possible, but not probable, that he had fathered a child during his ill health at the age of 70 or older.

The will of Gershom Conger, Junr, was witnessed by James Wilkison, who was probably a son of either, John, Edward, or Allen Wilkison, who were grandsons of John & Mary Kelly [Bel]Conger.

Gershom refers to himself as "Gershom Conger, Junr" [in the will], so his father would have [probably] had the name, Gershom. His "loving brother Thomas Cawood," could have been his brother-in-law, husband of his sister, Phoebe. Perhaps his "loving brother Robert Mitchell," was married to an unidentified sister.

Maxine Leonard was inclined to side with Charles L. Conger in placing this Gershom as the son of Gershom Conger, b. 1685, [the son of John Belconger].

11. Abigail Conger

Abigail Conger

PARENTS: The parents of Abigail Conger were, John Belconger and Sarah Cawood.

CONFLICT-MARRIAGE: The following information appeared in CFA II, p. 707 and is quoted exactly.
"Conger, Abigail (16) md James Clarkson (18) at Woodbridge NJ on 8 May 1690; d/o John Conger (Woodbridge Friends). This means Abigail was b. @@1674. Her brother, John Jr. was b. 24 May 1674, so her birthday was probably @1675. It is given as 1690 in the family records but no exact date."

CONFLICT-COMMENT:
It isn't clear from the information on page 707 of CFA II that the Abigail Conger, being discussed, was the daughter of John Belconger and Sarah Cawood.
On page 11-a of CFA I, she is listed as the first child of John and Sarah (Cawood) Belconger, being born in 1690 and married first to Mr. Brown and second to James Clarkson.

The Clarkson family group is listed on page 716 of CFA I as follows: James Clarkson, b. Abt. 1688, md. 18 Dec 1706 to Abigail Conger, b. 8 May 1690 at Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ, dau of John Belconger & Sarah Cawood. Their first child, Agnes Clarkson was born, 5 Jun 1708 and later married John Coddington. Another, source (not cited) lists the birth date of James Clarkson as, Abt. 1 Mar 1687 at Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ.

John Conger, Jr., born 24 May 1674 in Woodbridge, NJ was the half-brother of Abigail Conger, his parents being, John Belconger and Mary Kelly.

Therefore, it seems clear that the date, 8 May 1690, listed as the date of marriage on page 707 of CFA II is in error. This date is the birth date of Abigail Conger.

12. Joseph Conger

Joseph Conger

PARENTS: The parents of Joseph Conger were, John Belconger and Sarah Cawood.

COMMENT-BIRTH: 17 May 1692 may have been the date of baptism, rather than the birth date. See Ancestral File.

MARRIAGE: According to CFA I, p. 334, "... apparently was md to MARY MARSH. Probable issue:"

MILITARY: In 1715, Job Conger and his brother, Joseph, were Privates in Col. Thomas Farmer's New Jersey Militia Regiment, apparently at the time in the service of the Colony of New York.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, 275 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

BIOGRAPHY:
Joseph Conger lived at Woodbridge, NJ for many years, and it is likely that he died there.

He is mentioned in his father's will, dated 11 jan 1710, in which he was given his father's freehold rights, in the town of Woodbridge, and was also allowed to occupy the eastern portion of the farm for ten years after the decease of his father, and to have the use of all tools, carts, plows, etc., he being to equal in their repair as long as he lived on the place.

That portion of the land that he was allowed to live upon, had been devised to his younger brother, Benjamin, who at the time of the dating of the will, was about ten years of age, being born about 1700.

The permission given to Joseph to live on the land might indicate that he was married, in which event his wife must have been born as early as he was -- 1792 [sic, 1692]. However, Joseph Conger was mentioned in the will of John Marsh of Rahway, as being the husband of the testator's grand-daughter, Mary, which might indicate that she was rather old to have been named as grand-daughter of a man living as late as 1739, the date of the will, unless she was the second wife of Joseph Conger.

Charles L. Conger said there were four unattached Congers of the period, namely, Joseph of Sherman, Conn., John of Hanover, Morris county, NJ, Elizabeth, who married John Baldwin, and James, who he listed as being children of Joseph Conger (1692). They were all born between 1714 and 1720, except that James was born about 1734, and may be the issue of the second marriage of Joseph Conger.

His reasons for assuming that they were the children of Joseph Conger is by elimination. To begin with, there is no New Jersey record of any sort showing the birth of a son or daughter to Joseph Conger, but as a result of the elimination of all known parental contenders of that time, it is assumed the four above-mentioned Congers were the children of Joseph Conger.

On 2 Nov 1712, Joseph Conger, together with a number of other freeholders of the town of Woodbridge, gave power of attorney to three of their number, viz. John Bishop, Thomas Pike and Adam Hude, to sell as much of their land as will bring fourty pounds, which was to be applied to the cost ofa lawsuit being carried on in the name of John Pike, in defense against paying Quit-rents (new Jersey Deeds, C-2-86).

The Middlesex county court records show that in 1714 there was a case on trial, John Brock vs. Joseph Conger. No particulars were given.

On 23 Aug 1716 there was laid out to James Clarkson, Jr., 5 acres of land in Rahway, "it being half a third division lot in Woodbridge, which the said James Clarkson purchased of Joseph Conger." (W.T.R.A.-25)

On 13 Mar 1735, Joseph Conger witnessed the will of John Moore of Woodbridge.

On 14 Mar 1737, it was voted "that the committee appointed to manage the school land shall pay to Joseph Conger the sum of four pounds and ten shillings out of the rent of the said school land, it being the sum agreed upon by Henry Freeman and Joseph Bloomfield, appointed for the purpose." (W.T.R.-B-8)

RELATIONSHIP: A descendant of Job Conger, Lt. Col. Everton J. Conger, was Aide to Lafayette C. Baker. Lafayette C. Baker was the Chief of the National Detective Police (NDP, i.e., secret service) at the time of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, May 1865.

SPOUSE: Mary (Pierce) Percy is also listed as a spouse in Ancestral File. Can this spouse be proven? What is the source citation?

SPOUSE-QUESTION: Various records have stated that Job Conger was married first to Mary Percy or Pierce, as his wife, Keziah, was mentioned in his will. According to the evidence just found among an assortment of notes, your compiler [Maxine Leonard] is of the opinion, Job had but one wife.

Frome the "Hartford Times Queries," Hartford Times, Jan 23, 1854, Query B-5907, in part: "Job's wife was Mary Keziah, dau of Joseph (2) Thorp (Thomas 1) of Woodbridge. Deed of Zebulon (3) Thorp (Joseph-Thomas) Feb. 6, 1736 to Benjamin Thorp by Huder: (a schoolmaster of Woodbridge, N.J.). EMIGRATION:
Job Conger Jr. removed to Albany County, New York; Enoch removed to Dutchess County, New York and on to Darby, VT; Moses remained in Woodbridge until 1771 when he offered his land for sale.
(Furnished by Harold Murton Hyde)

PROBATE: Job Conger's will, dated 30 Jan 1749 at Woodbridge, Rahway Neck, East Jersey, refers to himself as "Yoeman." (A freeholder; a gentleman farmer)

To wife, Kezia, he left one half of his moveable estate. To his oldest son, Job, he left but ten pounds, as money to buy a plantation which had already been given him. The balanace of his moveable estate he divided among his daughters, the married ones to have half as much as the single ones, they having had their marriage portions.

To his sons, Enoch and Moses, he left "my farm land in Woodbridge, Rahway Neck, where I now dwell," when they are 18, but they could not sell same until they were 30.

The Executors named were wife, Keziah, son Enoch, and friend William Moore; witnesses Job Pack, Benjamin Thorp and Thomas Chapman.

Will proved 17 Feb 1758.

Benjamin Conger

PARENTS: The parents of Benjamin Conger were, John Belconger and Sarah Cawood.

Problem: Was the date of death, 10 Mar 1762 or as listed in Ancestral File, 19 Mar 1762?

PROBATE:
Very little is known of the early life of Benjamin Conger. He was perhaps about twelve years old when his father, John Conger, died. He is mentioned in his father's will, and is given one-half of the farm home, but with the express provision that his brother, Joseph, was to have the use and improvement of Benjamin's portion for the ensuing ten years, when it would revert to Benjamin.
(Source: The Conger Family of America, Vol. I, p. 34 - Maxine Crowell Leonard)

PROBATE:
Benjamin Conger's children, mentioned in his will in 1762, include among others: Daniel, Enoch, Sarah, Elizabeth and Lydia. In the case of Lydia, she was to be paid 50 pounds on her marriage day. If she were to die unmarried the 50 pounds would go the grandchildren, Sarah and Martha Goble, daughters of Simeon and Abigail (Conger) Goble; to Lydia, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Conger) Goble; to Zipporah and Abigail, the daughters of Daniel and Mary Conger.

Benjamin's will, dated at Morristown, was proved 10 Mar 1762. He described himself as Yoeman. To his wife, Experience, he left one third of the proceeds of his personal estate, and the use of the profits of one third of his real estate.

To his son, Daniel, he left the use of 10 acres at the east end of his plantation, adjoining Jonathan Wood. At Daniel's death it was to go to his son, Jonas. Another piece of land was given to Daniel for life, then to go to his son, Benjamin.

To Enoch he left wearing apparel and the rest of his real estate.

To daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth, 10 pounds each; to daughter, Lydia, unmarried, 50 pounds as mentioned.

Executors, son Enoch and friend, Jonathan Stiles. Witnesses: Samuel Oliver, John Primrose and Ezekiel Cheever.
